How to use this calculator
Enter your floor area in square metres, then choose laminate or engineered wood. We add 8% for cutting and offcuts and give you the total square metres to order.
How we calculate this
- Order quantity (m²) = floor area (m²) × 1.08.
- The 1.08 factor adds 8% wastage for cuts, offcuts and the odd damaged board.
- Laminate and engineered wood use the same area-based method; the difference is which product you price per m².
Worked example
A 20 m² living room in laminate: 20 × 1.08 = 21.6 m² to order. The spare 1.6 m² covers your cuts around the edges and any boards that don't make the grade.
UK notes & gotchas
- Flooring is sold by the pack, so round up to whole packs and check the pack coverage in m².
- Busy layouts with lots of doorways or diagonal laying need more than 8% - bump it to 10-12%.
- Keep a few spare boards from the same batch for repairs, as shades vary between runs.

Yes - both are area plus wastage; the type just changes the product priced per m².
Do I need underlay too?
Most floating floors need underlay - work out the same room area in m², with a little spare for trimming.
